The February issue of the JHI features a Special Section on antibiotic stewardship, opened by a systematic review of antimicrobial restrictions in bacterial resistance control by Chatzopoulou and Reynolds. The authors found low quality evidence that restrictive strategies seem to be effective in some situations, especially the use of beta-lactam-beta-lactamase inhibitor combinations to supplant broad-spectrum cephalosporins. In another important paper Lin et al. report that under an antibiotic stewardship programme many patients with reported antibiotic allergy labels can receive the preferred antibiotic treatment and consequently be de-labelled as allergic. The Special Section includes several other papers describing antibiotic stewardship efforts globally. Outside the work on antibiotic stewardship, the JHI is pleased to publish in this issue new comprehensive Guidelines from the International Society of Cardiovascular Infectious Diseases on the Diagnosis, Treatment and Prevention of Disseminated Mycobacterium chimaera Infection Following Cardiac Surgery with Cardiopulmonary Bypass.
